Showcase Concert Auditions Information

Students must be registered to attend the workshops prior to submitting an audition DVD or VHS.
Selection for performance at the Student Showcase Concert on November 9, 2007 and Parque Festival on November 11, 2007 is by audition only.

A total of five Mariachi groups and five vocalists will be selected to perform at the Student Showcase Concert. An additional three groups and vocalists will be invited to perform at Parque Festival. The mariachi groups will be selected from the following categories:
• Elementary/Mid-School or Youth Community Group (Elementary/Mid-School ages)
• High School or Youth Community Group (High School age)
• University Group or Adult Community Group
• Semi-Professional Group

Audition Instructions for Musicians and Vocalists:
Mariachi groups and individual vocalists wishing to audition to perform at the Student Showcase Concert or Parque Festival must submit a DVD disk or video tape (vhs format) by October 15, 2007. Groups and individual vocalists must be registered as a LCIMC Workshop Participant to audition.

Audition Video Format:
DVD / VHS must be clearly labeled with the Mariachi group name or Vocalist name, address, and contact phone number.
- A brief typed biography of the group (or vocalist) should also be included, and the appropriate category for the group audition. For example, select High School or Youth Community Group (High School age group).

- All video tapes selected for review can be retrieved during conference check-in process at the guest services counter. Any tapes left after the concert become the property of LCIMC.

- An Independent panel of judges will review the video tapes and make the selections. Mariachi groups and vocalists will be selected to perform at the Student Showcase Concert and the Parque Festival along with other invited guest groups.

Notification of Selected Performers
-The Showcase Concert Director will notify selected performing groups and/or vocalists by November 1, 2007. The contact name and phone number that is on the label of the audition DVD or video tape will be notified of the selection.

Videos Will Be Rated According to the Following Criteria:
Presentation - Does the group have proper (traditional) attire? Do the members of the group memorize their music or do they need to read their music? Do the performers make distracting movements or gestures? Is the musical interpretation appropriate for the selected song?

Tonality - Does the group have good tone? Are the instruments in tune? Are the vocalists in pitch?

Complexity - Does the level of musical difficulty match the expertise of the group? Is the musical selection challenging or easy?

Balance - Are the instruments balanced (ie: is there too much brass? too many guitars? not enough bass?) Are some instruments missing from the ensemble? Are the vocalists able to balance their voices against the mariachi group?

Stage Presence - Do the members of the group (or vocalist) physically express the music they are performing? (ie: facial features, eye contact, movement) Do these movements "add" to the performance or "take away" from the performance. Do the members of the group appear confident and portray appropriate showmanship?

Selected groups and vocalists will be notified by November 1, 2007 regarding performance in the Student Showcase Concert.
